Safety Stock

The proportion of different products and services that comprise total sales. A change in the mix can increase or decrease profits due to margin differences.

A time-based projection of expected customer orders. Used as part of the manufacturing planning process to ensure products are available when needed.

The location of a vessel that is tracked via a network of satelites. The information in updated on a regular basis.

Sawtooth Diagram
A graphical depiction of a company's inventory that shows how the inventory level of a firm varies with time. The highs and lows often look like the teeth of a saw.

Scalability
The ability to quickly increase production or services to meet demand.

Scan
Digitizing an image, allowing it to be stored, modified, or understood by a computer. An optical scanner is commonly used to read bar codes and RF tags.

Scanlon Plan
A cost-saving, gain-sharing, productivity-incentive plan in which a specified saving (e.g., labor per unit) is shared equally between the workers and the organization.

Scenario Planning
A management process that identifies in advance likely sets of relevant circumstances and reviews the impact of alternative responses to those situations.
