Data Dictionary
Collection of names, definitions, and attributes about data elements in a database or information system.

Data Interchange Standards Association (DISA)
Worked with other organizations to develop cross-industry electronic business interchange standards. Ceased functioning (2016). Replaced by ASC.

Data Mining
A process, using software, to turn raw data into useful information by looking for patterns in large batches of data.

Data Warehouse
The electronic storage of a large amount of information by an organization and designed to support business intelligence, especially analytics.

Database
Organized collection of information, or data, typically stored electronically in a computer system and formatted for rapid search and retrieval.

Date Code
The day, month and year specifying when a consumer product was manufactured, filled, or packaged, or a code indicating such a date.

Days of Supply
The quantity of inventory on hand relative to number of days for which usage will be covered. Example: 1000 units used at the rate of 50 per day equals 20 days.

Dead on Arrival (DOA)
Defective. A product which is not functional when delivered.

Deadhead
Moving a trailer or container without paying freight.

Deadweight Tons (DWT)
The weight a vessel can carry including cargo, stores, bunker fuel, and crew. Expressed in long tons (2,240 pounds).

Decarbonization
Reducing, or eliminating, the use of energy systems that produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions.

Decentralized Authority
Where a company's senior management gives decision-making authority to managers at many organizational levels.
